For us at Change the Game, it felt like coming home.

A theme that tied everything together

The theme of “human connection” ran like a common thread through the keynotes and presentations. This aligns closely with our own work, in which movement is always understood through relationships: to one’s own body, to the people around us, and to the environment in which we move. We view the fact that so many speakers arrived at the same perspective as a sign that the field is moving in a shared direction.

Stora salen fylldes

Our own session, led by Grim Jernudd and Tom Englén, on the power of relative comparisons was held in the main hall and attracted most of the conference attendees. The setup was simple. First, everyone got to try a classic form of physical activity: standing up and sitting down again. Next, we tested enriched variants, such as the rock-scissors-bag game with progressively increasing complexity and a Tom & Jerry-style speed workout.

As a framework for the comparison, we used Inner Development Goals (IDG). The participants themselves had to discuss which abilities were confirmed through the various activities. The conclusion was their own: in the enriched variants, significantly more abilities are trained at the same time, across dimensions such as thinking, relating, cooperating and acting. That is precisely the point. When you get the chance to experience the difference in your own body, it does not need to be explained.

Swedish and Ålandic participants

The Swedish-Ålandic team of participants:
Tobias Lind (SWE3), Grim Jernudd (Change the Game), Pilo Stylin (Swedish Budo and Martial Arts Federation), Monika Stylin (SWE3), Tom Englén (Change the Game), Lisa Borglund (Mälardalen University), and Emma Falander (Åland)

The activity is the tool, not the goal.

A lesson we like to highlight is that movement activities are used as tools to convey understanding of and ability to regulate underlying principles, they are not the goal in themselves. A common trap is that you get to try something fun and then think that you have to buy exactly the same material, for example juggling shawls, movement ladders or bird feathers, in order to continue doing the same activities without understanding the thoughts behind the design and the purpose of the activity. Then you get gadgets with limited value/use, but the truly long-term and scalable effect lies in the movement leader’s ability to create, lead and adapt their movement activities with the help of the underlying principles.

The same thought was present in Liz Durden-Myer and Kyle Pushkarenko’s session on the benefits of using analogies and metaphors to communicate the meaning of abstract phenomena. They proposed a description of physical literacy as partly fixed core, for example the holistic view of the human being, which applies regardless of context. Other parts are “liquid” or in “gaseous form” and can be adapted to local conditions. It provides a useful language for something we often struggle with: what must be the same everywhere and what must look different.

Built environments were given prominence.

For the first time, the built environment featured prominently at the conference.
